281 CF Spear Gun Shaft w/3-Prong Head

The 281 Carbon Fiber Spear Gun Shaft w/3-Prong Head* is made from 7075-T6 aluminum and the prongs are made from spring steel rods with a diameter of .162. Knurl for helping to secure prey is machined on each prong. Head is secured to spear gun shaft by T-88 Structural Epoxy glue. Body section is made from solid 9/32" carbon fiber rod (aka graphite rod) and back section is made from stainless steel. Hook up/s are made with 3/32" stainless steel rod and EURO Style a 3/32" hole at rear of shaft is provided for shooting line connection point and NON-EURO Style a 3/32” stainless steel DogHouse at rear just in front of shaft locked in trigger housing is provided for shooting line connection point. This complete spear can be made to work with most popular open muzzle spear guns in the market today and is primarily for shorter guns >=90cm. Primary use for this setup is for shooting fish in holes and to alleviate the pressure put on ones hand while 3-pronging for long periods of time. We chose to incorporate carbon fiber to cut down on the overall weight of the spear than that of it's steel counterpart which weighs about 2 times as much. Example; a 49-3/4" inch 281 CF Spear Gun Shaft w/3-Prong Head weighs about 224 grams compared to one with a steel shaft section which weighs about 370 grams. Our 281 CF Spear Gun Shaft w/3-Prong Head is offered in 2 colors (carbon fiber portion colored only); white or fluorescent (HIVis) yellow.

I went diving recently to get some real action footage of the 281 CF Spear Gun Shaft w/3-Prong Head rigged on my 80cm spear gun to show interested divers how it performs. I put together a short clip below of the spear's performance so you can get a good idea of how it works for yourself. Shot some Menpachis, a Moana and took out a Tako. I also shot about a 3lb Enenui maybe like 3' away from the tip of prongs but unfortunately I wasn't recording on this particular dive so have no footage but wanted to mention that the spear had no penetration problems with a larger fish that has far tougher skin than Mepachi & Moana. The Enenui ended up all the way back on the prongs.

My 281 CF Spear Gun Shaft w/3-Prong Head and power band details;

  • Shaft length: 49-3/4"

  • Overall Weight: 224 grams (a similar setup using 17/64" steel shaft would weigh approximately 370 grams)

  • Hookups: 2 (two) 3/32"; position from rear of shaft- front 5.5" and rear 3.5"

  • Color: HIVIS Yellow

  • Power Band: 1 (one) 1/2"X16" which yields about a 250% stretch produces about 66.3 lbs of force. 1/2" power band specs wall=3/16" and hole=1/8". If I wanted to use 1 (one) 9/16" band my length would be about 21" to give me about 63lbs of force.

Advantages compared to steel shafted 3-prong Spear and 3-Prong Pole Spear;

  • I found that because the overall spear is lighter than it's steel counter part I was able to use less power a single 1/2"X16" power band to be exact

  • Since less power is used the gun fired much smoother due to less recoil

  • Firing sound was much softer as you will witness in the video clip

  • This entire setup can fit into real small or awkward shaped holes that even a regular pole style 3-prong cannot get into. I also know some divers who use even shorter setups like 70cm or even a 50cm 3-prong spear gun*

  • No sore/fatigue hand since the spear gun holds all the pressure from the power band when loaded*

Advantages compared to spear gun single prong shaft with flopper barb;

  • In most cases less damage to struggling fish*

  • Less chance of getting stuck in reef/holes* Fire confidently in any hole or tight space knowing that you will be able to retrieve your spear shaft 99.9% of the time after doing so.

Disadvantages compared to steel shafted 3-Prong Spear and 3-Prong Pole Spear;

  • The CF shaft is not as strong as a steel one

  • Less range

  • Difficult to use shaft to pin fish in some situations like you can using a pole 3-prong due to its short length*

  • Counter weighting may need to be installed in spear gun to ensure it doesn't float with shaft locked in

  • Difficult to reload quickly on single dive due to the time it takes to re-rig shaft/line back on gun in event of a missed shot  unless you are a super diver or using a bottle*

  • Higher price

Disadvantages compared to single prong shaft with flopper barb;

  • Less range and penetration

  • Less holding power

*This applies to both a steel shafted and CF shafted spear gun shaft w/3-prong head.

Watch the clip below to get a good idea of how this shaft performs.

*Due to the labor involved in producing this shaft specifically machining the stainless steel back-end section we anticipate the retail price for it to be on the high side. We are not sure at this time that resellers want to carry this item so if you are interested in one please contact us directly.
